Curiosity and Growth: Hisham Osman's Lifelong Learning Journey
Hisham Osman’s journey demonstrates the transformative power of education and curiosity. A seasoned mechanical engineer from Egypt, Hisham transitioned from the oil and gas industry to mastering data science and financial engineering, fueled by his commitment to lifelong learning.
Hisham’s passion led him to explore online courses long before they became mainstream. During the COVID-19 lockdown, Hisham discovered WorldQuant University’s Master’s in Financial Engineering through a social media post. Initially skeptical about the value of a free program, he found the Program to be rigorous and comprehensive. “The program was exactly what I was looking for,” he said, highlighting its blend of mathematics, engineering, finance, and data science. While demanding, “it was a no-brainer.”
Balancing his roles as a full-time professional and father, Hisham embraced the program’s challenges with determination. Despite his strong academic background, he found the program to be his most challenging experience. Courses in stochastic calculus and machine learning pushed his limits. “At one point, I almost withdrew,” he admitted. “But it was challenging in an enjoyable way.” He credits the program’s structure, which balances individual and group work with accessible resources, for its effectiveness. “Even the papers and materials were free and high-quality, comparable to paid resources,” he noted.
The program’s global nature also stood out: Hisham collaborated with peers from countries like Zimbabwe and Kazakhstan, building lasting connections. In one memorable instance, he met a fellow alumna during a visit to Houston. Beyond completing the program, he became an advocate, encouraging many students, particularly in Egypt, to enroll - including his brother.
Now a data-driven professional, Hisham applies his skills in personal trading and plans to establish a recruitment agency focused on connecting talent in quantitative fields with global opportunities. He envisions this as a way to give back, helping others navigate their careers and gain recognition for their skills.
